A 43-year-old Red Lake man is facing life in prison after being charged with sexually abusing a woman on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
Alan James Lussier was indicted on July 23, 2013, for one count of sexual abuse, which alleges that on March 13, 2011, he caused the victim to engage in a sexual act by placing her in fear.
If convicted, Lussier faces a potential maximum penalty of life in prison. Any sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge.
The investigation into Lussier’s crimes was led by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
An indictment is a determination by a grand jury that there is probable cause to believe that offenses have been committed by a defendant. A defendant, of course, is presumed innocent until he or she pleads guilty or is proven guilty at trial.
The U.S. government is taking steps to address the high rates of violence against women on tribal reservations, including the creation of the Violence Against Women Federal and Tribal Prosecution Task Force.
