Sherwood sentenced

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A Minnesota man was sentenced to 60 months for the sexual assault of a minor on a U.S. Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan.

Ricky Isiah Sherwood, 19, pleaded guilty on November 14, 2014, to the crime. According to court documents, Sherwood was working at Kadena Air Base when he sexually assaulted a heavily intoxicated minor in a residence on base on February 11, 2014. The assault was also caught on film using Sherwood’s cellular phone.

The Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act gave federal courts jurisdiction over the case. U.S. District Judge Ann D. Montgomery imposed the 60-month sentence.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell, U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger, Acting Executive Assistant Director Charles Warmuth of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s (NCIS) Pacific Operations, and Special Agent in Charge Richard T. Thronton of the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office made the announcement.

The case was investigated by NCIS and the FBI. Trial Attorney Ann Marie Ursini of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Buzicky of the District of Minnesota prosecuted the case.

Sherwood’s sentence serves as a reminder of the seriousness with which federal authorities take crimes committed abroad by U.S. military personnel and their dependents.
