ALBUQUERQUE – A 35-year-old Albuquerque armed career criminal, Nathan Jensen, was handed a 20-year sentence this week for his role in federal firearms and assault convictions. U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson and other law enforcement officials announced the sentence on Friday afternoon.
Jensen’s sentence includes a mandatory minimum of 15 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. His conviction as an armed career criminal was based on at least three prior violent felony and serious drug offense convictions. In a separate case, Jensen was sentenced to 100 months for assaulting a federal officer, with 48 months to be served consecutively to the first sentence.
Additionally, Jensen violated his supervised release from a previous firearm conviction by failing to report to his probation officer or reside at a halfway house. He received an additional 24-month sentence, 12 months of which were consecutive to the other sentences.
U.S. Attorney Anderson called Jensen a prime example of a violent repeat offender who needed to be removed from the community. ‘This prosecution and the sentence will make our community safer,’ Anderson said.
ATF Special Agent in Charge John J. Durastanti emphasized the importance of removing serial offenders like Jensen from society, noting that such individuals pose a significant danger. ‘The brave men and women of law enforcement risk their lives every day to protect us, and ATF will continue to vigorously pursue anyone who attempts to do them harm,’ Durastanti stated.
Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Brent Broshow echoed the sentiment, saying, ‘We work with our local, state, and federal partners on a daily basis to accomplish our mission. Putting career criminals like Jensen behind bars makes our community a safer place to live.’ Jensen will be on supervised release for three years following his prison sentence.
