Denver – In a chilling verdict, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 24, of Colorado Springs, was handed down 55 consecutive life sentences for his brutal and targeted massacre at Club Q, an LGBTQIA+ establishment. The sentence amounts to 190 years in prison after Aldrich pleaded guilty to 74 hate crimes and firearms charges.
Aldrich admitted to the premeditated attack on November 19, 2022, where he murdered five people, injured 19 others, and attempted to murder 26 more with a privately manufactured assault weapon. The plea agreement states that Aldrich specifically targeted Club Q due to the actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity of its patrons.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the Justice Department’s commitment to protecting civil rights in response to the sentencing, highlighting the bravery of law enforcement and partners across various agencies who worked tirelessly on the case. ‘Fueled by hate,’ Garland said, ‘the defendant targeted members of the LGBTQIA+ community at a place that represented belonging and safety.’
FBI Director Christopher Wray commended the heroic actions of Club Q patrons who subdued Aldrich, emphasizing the FBI’s unwavering support for victims of homophobic violence. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke echoed sentiments of justice and protection, emphasizing that no one should fear hate-fueled attacks based on identity or orientation.
Acting U.S. Attorney Matt Kirsch vowed that such heinous acts would not be tolerated in Colorado, hoping the sentence brings some measure of peace to victims. ATF Director Steven Dettelbach highlighted the ongoing efforts to ensure hatred does not triumph, reinforcing the importance of safety for all communities during Pride Month.
The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the FBI Denver Field Office, Colorado Springs Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alison Connaughty and [U.S. Attorney’s Office staff] played crucial roles in bringing Aldrich to justice.
