Former Chief Deputy Zachary Hunter Alexander of the Stone County Sheriff’s Office is facing a 33-month federal prison sentence after being caught selling a stolen firearm and extorting money under false pretenses. The sentence, announced by United States Attorney Jonathan D. Ross for the Eastern District of Arkansas, follows Alexander’s guilty plea on August 14, 2023.
A federal grand jury indicted Alexander in May 2022 on an 11-count charge, including selling a stolen firearm and extortion under color of official right. The investigation revealed that on December 2019, Alexander sold one of the Remington 700, 6.5 Creedmore sniper rifles belonging to the Stone County Sheriff’s Office for his personal gain.
On February 19, 2020, Alexander misused his authority as Chief Deputy to obtain $3,809.10 from the Stone County Treasurer, falsely claiming it was for reimbursing a pawn shop. However, no items were actually purchased from the pawn shop, and Alexander kept the cash. The investigation also uncovered fraudulent credit card purchases and check kiting activities by Alexander.
United States District Judge Lee P. Rudofsky sentenced Alexander to 33 months in federal prison, two years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay $153,786.84 in restitution. Alexander’s sentence includes no parole in the federal system.
The investigation was conducted by the Arkansas State Police with assistance from various law enforcement agencies, including the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, Stone County Sheriff’s Foundation, Stone County Treasurer’s Office, 16th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
