Crime Spree Ends in Prison Time for Armored Car Employee

A brazen heist on Long Island left an armored car empty-handed, but a trio of defendants will be spending the next few years behind bars.

Alexis Laguerra, 32, of Brooklyn, and his cohorts, Raymond Soto, Sr., 49, and Raymond Soto, Jr., 29, both from Richmond Hill, Queens, were sentenced to 30 months, 33 months, and 18 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in the bank larceny.

The crime, which took place on November 2, 2018, in Valley Stream, New York, involved Laguerra, an employee of GardaWorld, using his insider knowledge to plot and carry out the theft. He left the armored car unoccupied and unguarded outside a bank, allowing Soto, Jr. to enter the vehicle, drive a short distance, and remove three bags of cash totaling $510,000.

Soto, Sr., driving a getaway car, picked up Soto, Jr. and the cash and fled. Law enforcement authorities later recovered $130,000 of the stolen money from Soto, Sr.’s residence in Queens.

The defendants were ordered to pay forfeiture of $300,000 and restitution of $510,000 to GardaWorld. They pleaded guilty in April 2019.

Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, praised the FBI and the Nassau County Police Department for quickly solving the crime and demonstrating that crime doesn’t pay.

NCPD Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder commended the investigators and their agencies for a job well done, saying the sentencing was a clear example of how law enforcement agencies working together brought the defendants to justice.

The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s Long Island Criminal Division, with Assistant United States Attorneys Charles P. Kelly and Madeline O’Connor in charge of the prosecution.
