HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In a gritty victory against the illegal drug trade, Steven McCallister, 47, of Barboursville, Cabell County, was convicted on federal charges of distributing fentanyl and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
United States Attorney Mike Stuart hailed the conviction as a significant win for West Virginia. ‘McCallister was found guilty on all counts in near record time due to overwhelming evidence,’ Stuart said, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to reclaim streets from drug dealers.
The investigation began with a June 12, 2019, controlled buy of heroin by agents of the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT). Following the buy at McCallister’s residence, law enforcement executed a search warrant revealing over a kilogram of fentanyl/heroin mix and a loaded .357 handgun in his bedroom.
McCallister, a convicted felon, was barred from firearm possession. The jury found him guilty of possessing the gun to further his drug trafficking activities. Assistant United States Attorneys Greg McVey and Joseph Adams prosecuted the case under United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers.
The investigation involved multiple agencies including MDENT, Violent Crime and Drug Task Force West, U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the West Virginia State Police.
McCallister faces a minimum sentence of 20 years to life in prison at his December 7, 2020 sentencing hearing. For more information, visit the Southern District of West Virginia U.S. Attorney’s Office website or search Case No. 3:19-cr-00153 on PACER.
