CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A grim tale of border exploitation has unfolded as a 62-year-old Alamo resident, Lazaro Rosendo Vega, has been caught smuggling illegal aliens. Vega, the driver of a maroon tractor-trailer, was apprehended at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint on May 30.
Authorities noticed Vega’s erratic behavior and high seat position during primary inspection. When questioned about his cargo, he claimed to be transporting avocados. However, an x-ray scan revealed two Mexican citizens concealed under blankets in the sleeper cab.
Vega confessed that one of the illegal aliens had paid $9,000 to be smuggled into Fort Worth and was hidden with another man inside the truck for hours before heading north. The defendant also admitted to blocking the dash camera view prior to picking up the aliens.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos accepted Vega’s plea and set sentencing for December 10, where he faces up to five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Vega remains on bond until that date.
The investigation was conducted by the Border Patrol, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Izaak Bruce and Patrick Overman prosecuting the case. This operation is part of Operation Take Back America, a DOJ initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
For Vega, the road ahead is paved with consequences as he grapples with the reality of his actions and the justice system’s response.
