CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Lazaro Rosendo Vega, 62, of Alamo, Texas, is facing federal prison time after admitting to transporting two Mexican citizens illegally concealed within a tractor-trailer. The confession, announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, pulls back the curtain on a callous smuggling operation preying on desperate individuals.
The scheme began to unravel May 30th at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint. Agents observed Vega driving a maroon tractor-trailer and immediately flagged his behavior as suspicious. He was sitting unusually high in the driver’s seat and exhibiting what authorities described as abnormally loud and excited demeanor. When questioned about his cargo, Vega offered a flimsy story: “avocados loaded about two hours ago.”
That lie didn’t hold water. An x-ray scan of the trailer quickly revealed the truth – two individuals hidden under blankets on the top bunk of the sleeper cab. Both were identified as citizens of Mexico. Vega attempted to play dumb, claiming he had no knowledge of the men hiding just feet behind him. But investigators weren’t buying it. The evidence suggests Vega actively participated in a calculated effort to bypass border security.
Details revealed during Vega’s plea paint a grim picture. One of the smuggled aliens confessed to entering the United States approximately a month prior. He was allegedly held at a warehouse before being placed in Vega’s tractor-trailer. The man had paid $9,000 to be smuggled to Fort Worth, enduring extended periods hidden inside the cramped cab alongside another individual. Vega, in a clear attempt to cover his tracks, had deliberately blocked the view of the truck’s dash camera before picking up the aliens.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos accepted Vega’s guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for December 10th. He now faces up to five years in federal prison and a potential $250,000 fine. Vega was allowed to remain on bond until the sentencing hearing. The investigation was spearheaded by the dedicated agents of the Border Patrol, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Izaak Bruce and Patrick Overman.
This case is not isolated. It’s part of “Operation Take Back America,” a sweeping nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels, and protecting communities from violent crime.
