GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a gritty crackdown on drug trafficking, Dylan Everett Halbur, 33, of Spencer, Iowa, has been slammed with an eight-plus-year federal prison sentence for methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.
The grim reality unfolded on March 28, 2025, when Halbur pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute a mixture containing detectable amounts of methamphetamine. His downfall began on August 26, 2024, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at a camper in Spencer where Halbur was known to stash his illegal goods.
Inside the camper, authorities found approximately 45 grams of pure meth, $2,900 in cash, marijuana, a digital scale, and other paraphernalia indicative of drug use and distribution. Halbur confessed that the meth was his, and he intended to sell some or all of it to another party.
Halbur’s sentence of 105 months’ imprisonment includes a mandatory three-year term of supervised release following his release from prison. Federal law dictates there is no parole available in this system. Currently, Halbur is being held by the United States Marshals Service until he can be transported to federal custody.
The case was handled with relentless determination by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood, who prosecuted the charges. The Spencer Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Laboratory collaborated in this landmark investigation.
