GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a crackdown on drug trafficking, Dylan Everett Halbur, 33, from Spencer, Iowa, has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand on August 27, 2025.
Halbur pleaded guilty on March 28, 2025, to one count of possessing a mixture containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine. The plea and sentencing hearings revealed that law enforcement executed a search warrant at Halbur’s camper in Spencer on August 26, 2024. Inside, authorities found approximately 45 grams of methamphetamine, $2,900 in cash, marijuana, a digital scale, and other indicators of drug use and distribution.
Halbur admitted that the methamphetamine was his and that he intended to distribute it to another individual. The sentence imposed includes 105 months’ imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
Halbur is currently being held in the custody of the United States Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood prosecuted the case, while the Spencer Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa DCI Laboratory conducted the investigation.
