GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a stunning turn of events, Michael Geraghty, 41, from Mason City, Iowa, has been slammed with federal charges for distributing methamphetamine. The Indictment, unsealed on February 1, 2013, in the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, alleges that Geraghty was involved in meth distribution as far back as July 2012.
Geraghty’s past is no secret; he had previously been convicted of a felony drug offense in May 2007 in Black Hawk County. If found guilty on all charges, the man from Mason City could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, with a maximum of life behind bars. A financial penalty of $8,000,000 looms large, along with $200 in special assessments and up to 8 years of supervised release.
On February 1, 2013, Geraghty appeared before federal court in Cedar Rapids. His fate was left hanging as he was held without bond pending a detention hearing on February 6, 2013.
The case against Geraghty is a collaborative effort by the Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers and local law enforcement agencies, including the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Mason City Police Department, and Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
