Patrick Chamberlain, Fentanyl Distribution, Michigan 2024

BAY CITY, MI – Patrick Chamberlain, 25, of Saginaw, is headed to federal prison for a decade after admitting to running a fentanyl distribution network that flooded the Bay City area with the deadly opioid. U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. announced the sentencing last week, a rare win in the ongoing, uphill battle against the nation’s fentanyl crisis.

Chamberlain pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl. The case, built by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), revealed a sophisticated operation involving multiple packages shipped to a Chamberlain relative’s home throughout 2022. Authorities intercepted one package in December of that year containing nearly three kilograms – over six pounds – of fentanyl pills. This wasn’t a one-off; Chamberlain orchestrated the delivery of numerous similar packages.

The investigation showed Chamberlain didn’t work alone. He conspired with others to funnel the fentanyl into Michigan, then personally retrieved the shipments upon arrival. From there, the pills were dispersed throughout the streets of Bay City, adding fuel to an already raging epidemic. The DEA’s Detroit Field Office, led by Acting Special Agent in Charge Andrew Lawton, played a crucial role in unraveling the network.

“Fentanyl is a plague on the American people,” Gorgon stated bluntly. “We will do all that we can to fight this deadly drug and save precious lives.” The sentiment, while common, rings hollow to those on the front lines of the opioid crisis, but the conviction and sentencing of Chamberlain represents a temporary dent in the supply chain.

Lawton echoed the U.S. Attorney’s resolve, stating, “The sentencing of Mr. Chamberlain sends a clear message: those who traffic fentanyl and other deadly drugs will be held accountable.” He emphasized the collaborative effort, highlighting the dedication of agents and partners in disrupting these networks. “DEA remains committed to protecting Michigan communities from the devastating impact of fentanyl and ensuring that justice is served.”

The investigation wasn’t solely a federal effort. The Michigan State Police Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives provided vital assistance. Assistant United States Attorney William Orr prosecuted the case, securing the 10-year sentence for Chamberlain. While one dealer is off the streets, the fight against fentanyl continues, demanding relentless investigation and prosecution to stem the tide of this deadly drug.
