A Honduran national, Carlos Rene Medina-Ayala, 48, is behind bars for re-entering the United States after being deported nearly 12 years ago.
Medina-Ayala, a native of Honduras, was indicted on June 20, 2025, for illegal re-entry of a removed alien, in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a). According to the indictment, Medina-Ayala was found to have reentered the United States on June 2, 2025, after being previously deported on November 7, 2013.
This is not the first time Medina-Ayala has faced the law. For this offense, he faces up to two years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, up to one year of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. The prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman of the General Crimes Unit.
Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson praised the work of United States Border Patrol in investigating this matter. Simpson reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that aims to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime. The operation streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
The DOJ’s Operation Take Back America is a critical step in combating the root causes of crime in our nation. By targeting the perpetrators of illegal immigration and their accomplices, we can create safer communities for all Americans.
