Alfonso Randall, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Wisconsin 2023

JANESVILLE, WI – Alfonso Randall, 40, of Janesville, Wisconsin, is headed back to prison for three years after being sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Randall, already saddled with a rap sheet, pleaded guilty to the charge on October 20, 2022, but claimed he was attempting to ‘hold police accountable’ – a flimsy excuse that didn’t sway the judge.

The trouble began February 20, 2021, when Randall actively interfered with a traffic stop conducted by Janesville police. But the real evidence wasn’t found at the scene. Randall, seemingly oblivious to the consequences, then posted videos online showcasing his interference and escalating the situation. These videos included threats directed at law enforcement and, damningly, footage of Randall brandishing a handgun directly at the camera. He also posted videos of himself firing the weapon at a gun range.

Randall’s history made his possession of the firearm illegal. Court records show prior convictions for state drug trafficking offenses in 2001 and 2002. Even more seriously, in 2009, Randall was convicted in federal court for distributing crack cocaine, receiving a hefty 100-month sentence. Despite this lengthy incarceration, Randall apparently learned no lesson.

Judge Conley, while acknowledging Randall’s self-proclaimed motive, wasn’t buying it. The judge stated Randall needed to respect police directions when asked to stop interfering. More importantly, Conley highlighted the danger Randall posed by presenting “reckless video images” and concealing firearms within his residence, accessible to teenagers who lived there. The court found Randall was actively endangering others through his irresponsible behavior and promotion of dangerous gun practices – a point Randall himself conceded.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Janesville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan handled the prosecution of the case. This sentencing is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities.

PSN, relaunched in May 2021, focuses on building trust within communities, supporting local organizations working to prevent violence, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and meticulously measuring the results. While Randall argued for a different narrative, the facts – and the firearms found in his home – spoke for themselves. Three years in prison is the consequence of his actions, and a clear message that illegally possessing firearms after a felony conviction will not be tolerated.
