Mohammed Al-Ghool, Unlawful Firearm Possession, Florida 2018

A Fort Lauderdale federal jury yesterday convicted Mohammed Al-Ghool, 50, of Broward County, of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition while being an alien illegally in the United States.

The jury’s verdict came after a trial that revealed Al-Ghool’s violent outburst at a convenience store in Fort Lauderdale on April 13, 2018. Al-Ghool, a citizen of a foreign country without valid U.S. identification or immigration documents, threw merchandise at a co-worker and then produced a firearm, shooting a round of ammunition that hit the ceiling tile directly above the co-worker’s head.

Benjamin G. Greenberg, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, commended the investigatory efforts of Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in this matter.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Don Chase, who will now work with U.S. District Court Judge William P. Dimitrouleas to determine Al-Ghool’s sentence. Al-Ghool is scheduled to be sentenced on October 10, 2018.

The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping our communities safe from crime and protecting the rights of all citizens.

Al-Ghool’s conviction serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violating U.S. laws and regulations. The case is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the men and women who work tirelessly to enforce our nation’s laws.
