ALBUQUERQUE – Joe Ray Alires, 42, of Albuquerque, N.M., has been handed a 15-year sentence for unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition. This stunning revelation comes from Acting U.S. Attorney James D. Tierney and ATF Special Agent in Charge Thomas G. Atteberry.
Alires was charged with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition on June 26, 2014, in Bernalillo County, N.M. Despite having at least ten felony convictions including residential burglary, drug possession, and deadly weapon possession as a prisoner, Alires managed to evade the law until his capture.
On March 9, 2017, Alires pleaded guilty under a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He admitted to possessing a loaded pistol on June 26, 2014, despite being a convicted felon.
This case was part of a federal anti-violence initiative aimed at the ‘worst of the worst’ offenders. Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Walsh prosecuted the case, which targeted repeat and violent offenders primarily based on their prior convictions.
New Mexico’s District Attorneys and state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies are collaborating under this initiative to remove repeat offenders from communities. With a violent crime rate among the highest in the nation, New Mexico is cracking down on such offenses.
Under this aggressive approach, Alires will be kept away from communities for as long as possible, ensuring his sentence serves as a deterrent for others considering similar actions.
