St. Louis Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing $115,392 from Dead Relative’s Government Benefits
ST. LOUIS – In a shocking case of government benefits theft, Alphonso Dixon, 57, of St. Louis County, Missouri, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government money.
Dixon’s relative died on December 31, 2008, but her death was not reported to the Social Security Administration, allowing her benefits to continue being deposited into her bank account. She also received at least one COVID-related stimulus payment and pension benefits from the City of St. Louis Employees Retirement System.
Dixon accessed his deceased relative’s bank account and used the money for his own benefit. In total, he stole $115,392 in Social Security benefits, a $1,400 stimulus payment, and $36,000 in pension money.
The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gwen Carroll is prosecuting the case.
Dixon is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both prison and a fine.
The case highlights the importance of reporting the death of a beneficiary to the relevant authorities to prevent similar cases of government benefits theft.
Alphonso Dixon’s sentencing is set for August 21. He faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, for his crime.
