Altius Willix, Methamphetamine Conspiracy, FL 2016

A Winter Haven man is locked up for life after a violent clash with federal agents during a methamphetamine sting. Altius Willix, 48, was sentenced to life in prison by U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazarra in Tampa, Florida, following a 2016 conviction on charges of conspiracy, attempted possession of methamphetamine, and assaulting federal officers.

Willix’s downfall began when he orchestrated the shipment of four pounds of pure meth from Tempe, Arizona, to his home base in Winter Haven. The package was intercepted by law enforcement, who set up surveillance. When Willix went to retrieve the parcel, three federal agents moved in. Instead of surrendering, he bolted—ramming into one agent and knocking him to the pavement.

The assault didn’t stop there. As agents struggled to subdue him, Willix fought back with dangerous force, injuring multiple officers. During the violent scuffle, he made a chilling threat: “You’re gonna have to kill me.” He also attempted to grab service weapons from two agents, reaching for their holstered firearms in a move that could have turned deadly.

A federal jury saw the evidence and delivered a guilty verdict on August 4, 2016. The conviction hinged on surveillance footage, agent testimony, and Willix’s own actions during the botched pickup. His attempt to arm himself against law enforcement added serious weight to the assault charges, sealing his fate at sentencing.

The investigation was a joint operation between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Winter Haven Police Department. The collaboration tracked the drug shipment from Arizona and built a case that held firm through trial.

Assistant United States Attorney Carlton C. Gammons prosecuted the case, pushing for the maximum penalty. With a life sentence handed down, Altius Willix will spend the rest of his days behind bars—paying the price for his role in a deadly drug scheme and his violent resistance to federal authority.
