Iowa Man Sentenced for Breaking Immigration Laws

POSTVILLE, IA – In a harsh reminder of the consequences of breaking immigration laws, a man who illegally returned to the United States after being deported was sentenced to more than three months in federal prison.

Alvaro Ortiz-Camarillo, a 23-year-old citizen of Mexico and resident of Postville, Iowa, received the prison term after a guilty plea to one count of illegal reentry into the United States. Ortiz-Camarillo was previously deported from the United States and illegally reentered the country without the permission of the United States government.

According to court documents, Ortiz-Camarillo was deported on January 14, 2019, following a conviction in the Southern District of Texas for illegal entry, a misdemeanor. Ortiz-Camarillo most recently came to the attention of immigration agents on December 28, 2019, following his arrest in Allamakee County, Iowa, for disorderly conduct and public intoxication. This case was dismissed after his federal indictment.

Ortiz-Camarillo was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. Ortiz-Camarillo was sentenced to 104 days’ imprisonment. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Ortiz-Camarillo is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be turned over to immigration officials. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Grimy Times reached out to local authorities for comment but received no response. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking immigration laws and the importance of border security.
