MUSKOGEE, OK – Alyssia Marie Jae Carey, 26, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to a brazen scheme involving the widespread use of counterfeit U.S. currency. Carey admitted to knowingly passing fake bills at three separate businesses in Tahlequah during a two-week span in November 2017, a clear attempt to defraud local merchants.
According to court documents, Carey first hit Clear Creek 66 on November 14, 2017, attempting to pass two phony twenty-dollar Federal Reserve Notes, Series 2013. Investigators meticulously documented the bills’ serial numbers – MF57071698C (Quadrant # 2, Face Plate 66, Back Plate 46, Federal Reserve Bank B2) and MG04098161 (Quadrant # 2, Face Plate 1, Back Plate 3, Federal Reserve Bank G7) – as evidence of their fraudulent nature. Carey didn’t stop there.
Just ten days later, on November 24th, Carey targeted Hit-N-Run, again attempting to use a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. This particular note, a Series 2009 bill with the serial number JB14517500F (Quadrant # 2, Face Plate 218, Back Plate 156, Federal Reserve Bank B2), was also identified as fake. But the most significant haul came the following day. On November 25th, Carey allegedly flooded Dollar General with nine counterfeit five-dollar Federal Reserve Notes, Series 2006, all bearing the serial number IB70330255H (Quadrant # 4, Face Plate 8, Back Plate 5, Federal Reserve Bank J9).
The investigation, a joint effort between the Tahlequah Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service, quickly uncovered the pattern of deceit. While the Secret Service rarely publicizes details of ongoing investigations, sources within the agency confirm that counterfeit operations, even localized ones, are taken extremely seriously due to their potential to destabilize the financial system. The agency’s involvement signals the seriousness of Carey’s actions.
Carey now faces up to 20 years imprisonment on each of the two counts of Uttering A Counterfeit Obligation Of The United States, and up to 20 years on the count of Passing A Counterfeit Obligation Of The United States. She also faces a potential fine of up to $250,000.00 *per count*. U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven P. Shreder accepted the plea and has ordered a presentence investigation report to be completed, meaning a full assessment of Carey’s background and the impact of her crimes will be considered before sentencing. Assistant United States Attorney John David Luton is prosecuting the case.
This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly small-scale counterfeit operations carry significant federal penalties. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing as it becomes available. Local businesses are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit currency to law enforcement immediately.
