Conyers, Georgia – The grimy halls of justice dealt a severe blow to two counterfeiters this week as Christopher Williams, 28, and David Birdsong, 32, from Conyers and Lithia Springs, respectively, were sentenced to serve nearly four years (45 months) imprisonment for their fraudulent escapades.
The pair were caught red-handed by Valdosta’s Family Dollar Stores employees on February 7, 2014. Williams and Birdsong had successfully purchased $700 in prepaid debit cards using 14 counterfeit $50 bills before their arrest at a Quitman Family Dollar Store, where they were thwarted from spending four more forged notes.
Law enforcement officials uncovered over $3000 worth of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills, along with a scanner/copier/printer used in the counterfeiting process, hidden in the trunk of their car. Their arrest was the result of sharp-eyed store employees who didn’t let the fake cash slip through their fingers.
United States Attorney Michael J. Moore echoed sentiments of justice served. “The United States has a particular interest in bringing to justice those who seek to steal from others by making and using counterfeit Federal Reserve Notes. The sentences in this case demonstrate that those who do so will spend significant time repaying what they have tried to steal,” he said.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Secret Service, Valdosta Police Department, and Quitman Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Robert D. McCullers leading the prosecution for the Government.
