Two Albany, Georgia residents, Dontreal Jenkins, 31, and Trevayne Jones, 37, have been handed a heavy sentence for their roles in a brazen embezzlement scheme that swindled $713,000 from federal student aid programs. On July 11, 2013, U.S. District Judge W. Louis Sands sentenced Jenkins and Jones to serve 133 months each in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Both were also ordered to pay a mandatory assessment fee of $400 and a substantial restitution sum to the victim totaling $713,000.
Jenkins was additionally found guilty of Mail and Wire Fraud Conspiracy, while Jones faced charges of Misleading Statements. The duo’s scheme involved stealing and cashing U.S. Treasury checks and committing identity theft by using the names and signatures of intended payees without their permission.
“My office will continue to use necessary resources to prosecute individuals who steal from the taxpayers,” said Michael J. Moore, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia. “When these defendants stole from our student aid program, they didn’t just take money; they threatened the dreams of deserving students.”
Yessyka Santana, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General’s Southern Regional Office, echoed Moore’s sentiments: “Federal student aid exists so that individuals can pursue and make their dream of a higher education a reality. As the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Education, ensuring that those who steal student aid or game the system for their own selfish purposes are stopped and held accountable for their criminal actions is a big part of our mission.”
The investigation into Jenkins and Jones was conducted by the United States Secret Service and the United States Department of Education, Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Jim Crane prosecuted the case.
