Amsterdam Man Guilty of Child Pornography
Kevin Safford, a 33-year-old man from Amsterdam, New York, has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in a federal court in Albany.
According to the plea agreement, Safford admitted to accessing an online forum called Playpen in 2015, where users traded and shared child pornography. The site was accessible only through an anonymous Internet network, making it difficult to track users.
Safford also admitted to possessing child pornography on an external hard drive. The FBI seized the Playpen website and shut it down in 2015.
As part of his plea, Safford faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino on October 23, 2018. He also faces a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life, a fine of up to $250,000, and mandatory registration as a sex offender.
The case was investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett. It is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood is a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as rescue victims.
The case is a reminder of the dangers of online child exploitation and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
