Terre Haute Man Sentenced to 17 Years in Prison for Firearm Charge
A Terre Haute man has been sentenced to 210 months (over 17 years) imprisonment for illegally possessing a firearm, despite having more than five felony convictions.
Andre Jackson, 57, of Terre Haute, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William T. Lawrence after a May 2, 2015, incident where he shot at a man with a shotgun to prevent him from entering his house. Law enforcement officers encountered Jackson and seized a .12-gauge shotgun from a trashcan adjacent to his house.
According to officials, Jackson is not legally permitted to own a firearm due to his extensive criminal history, which includes convictions for crimes of violence in both Cook County, Illinois, and Vigo County. His convictions include residential burglary, two robberies, unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated vehicular hijacking.
U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler emphasized the importance of protecting neighborhoods from gun violence, stating, ‘There is no tolerance for this type of violence and those who choose to violate our laws will be held accountable.’
The case was investigated by the Terre Haute Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew J. Lasher prosecuting the case for the government. Jackson must serve five years of supervised release after his sentence.
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis Division, W. Jay Abbott, added, ‘This individual is a perfect example of why the law, illegal possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, was enacted. He is a career criminal with a long history of violence, and this sentence ensures he is no longer a threat to the community.’
The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws and ignoring community safety.
