Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Firing Gun in Indianapolis Neighborhood
An Indianapolis man with an extensive criminal history was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison after being found guilty of illegally possessing ammunition.
Ruben Mancillas, 50, was convicted by a jury last fall for firing a handgun into the air in his east side neighborhood in August 2015. His arrest came after neighbors, who witnessed the heated argument between Mancillas and his girlfriend, called police.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers apprehended Mancillas, who was found to have dozens of rounds of ammunition at the scene. A ballistics-sniffing dog assisted in the search.
At trial, neighbors and officers testified, and the jury convicted Mancillas on all charges. His lengthy and violent criminal history, which includes roughly 20 convictions over the past 35 years, was taken into consideration during sentencing.
U.S. District Judge William T. Lawrence handed down the 100-month sentence in part due to Mancillas’ pattern of violent behavior, including firing the gun into the air just six weeks after being discharged from parole.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Linder, who prosecuted the case, stated that Mancillas must serve 3 years of supervised release following his sentence.
The case was investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler warned that individuals with long criminal histories, particularly those who possess guns and ammunition, will be targeted and prosecuted.
“Guns and ammunition in the hands of convicted felons, particularly those with long criminal histories, leads to much of the violence in Indianapolis,” Minkler said. “These individuals are on notice: we will catch you, take you to trial, convict you and you will go to federal prison.”
