Lonnie Lewis Jr. Faces Justice for Felon in Possession of Firearm Charge

A Michigan City man is behind bars after being found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Lonnie Lewis Jr., 22, was sentenced to 78 months’ imprisonment and 2 years supervised release by South Bend District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio.

The charges stem from a high-speed chase that took place on September 9, 2016. Police attempted to perform a traffic stop on Lewis, but instead of submitting, he fled in a vehicle at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. While fleeing, Lewis tossed a loaded gun and drugs out of the window. Police arrested the defendant after his car hit a tree.

After being arrested, Lewis tried to enlist others to retrieve his gun and drugs from the route of pursuit. The case was the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Michigan City Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Joel Gabrielse handled the case.

Lewis has a prior conviction for dealing cocaine, a level 4 felony offense in LaPorte Superior Court, which was convictions in August of 2015. This conviction makes him a felon and prohibits him from possessing a firearm.

The sentencing of Lewis serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such activities. The Northern District of Indiana will continue to work tirelessly to keep its communities safe from those who choose to break the law.
