Baker’s Mail Fraud Scheme Unravels in Des Moines Courtroom
DES MOINES, IA – In a shocking display of greed and deceit, Andrea G. Baker, 50, of Elkhart, Iowa, was sentenced to 27 months of imprisonment for her role in a brazen mail fraud scheme that left the Ames Chi Omega Alumnae Association reeling.
Baker, who served as treasurer for the organization from 2000 to 2014, used her position to embezzle over $1.6 million from the association’s accounts. The scheme, which spanned 14 years, involved mailing checks from the association’s account to pay for personal credit card expenses, depositing funds into personal bank accounts, and obtaining cash from the association’s account for her personal use.
To conceal her misconduct, Baker made false entries and omissions in the association’s financial records. The scheme was finally uncovered, and Baker was charged with one count of mail fraud on June 2, 2016. She pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced on October 6, 2016.
The investigation into Baker’s scheme was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the cooperation of the Ames Chi Omega Alumnae Association. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Baker’s sentence includes three years of supervised release following her term of imprisonment and a restitution order of $1,656,583.11. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of white-collar crime and the importance of accountability in protecting the public trust.
