Angel Daniel Miranda-Contreras, Importation of Fentanyl, Heroin, Methamphetamine, and Cocaine, Arizona 2023

In a shocking display of brazen disregard for the law, Angel Daniel Miranda-Contreras, a 29-year-old man from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, was sentenced to 41 months in prison for importing massive quantities of fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the United States.

According to court documents, on August 5, 2022, Miranda-Contreras crossed the border from Mexico into the United States in a 2015 Volkswagen Crossfox at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona. Concealed in hidden compartments inside the vehicle were 47 kilograms of fentanyl, five kilograms of methamphetamine, two kilograms of cocaine, and 870 grams of heroin.

At the time, Miranda-Contreras claimed that he was unaware that he was smuggling illegal narcotics into the United States, but that he had only agreed to smuggle money from the United States to Mexico. However, investigators quickly uncovered the truth and brought Miranda-Contreras to justice.

Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation in this case, with Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Cavanaugh, District of Arizona, Tucson, handling the prosecution.

Miranda-Contreras pleaded guilty on April 10, 2023, to Importation of Fentanyl, Importation of Heroin, Importation of Methamphetamine, and Importation of Cocaine. The case number is CR-22-01900-TUC-RM, and the release number is 2023-118_Miranda-Contreras.
