Methamphetamine Ring Busted on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
A shocking case of methamphetamine distribution has been brought to justice on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Angel Provincial, a 23-year-old man from Wanblee, was convicted of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
The investigation, which spanned from August 2009 to July 2012, revealed that Provincial conspired with others to distribute methamphetamine in and around the reservation. The Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety all played a crucial role in bringing the case to light.
Provincial pled guilty to the charge on May 8, 2013, and was subsequently sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken to 51 months’ imprisonment. He will also serve 3 years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride prosecuted the case, ensuring that Provincial would face the full weight of the law. The U.S. Marshals Service has been holding Provincial in custody since the sentencing.
Provincial’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of methamphetamine distribution on communities. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has long struggled with the effects of substance abuse, and this case highlights the need for continued efforts to combat the scourge of methamphetamine.
