A former postmaster in Ohio has been charged with stealing over $55,000 from the U.S. Postal Service.
Ann Apana, 66, of Maple Heights, Ohio, was charged with theft of property used by the U.S. Postal Service, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.
Between June 12, 2009, and June 15, 2014, Apana allegedly stole approximately $38,741.42 in money and merchandise from the Postal Service and made approximately $18,341.08 in unauthorized purchases of postage using customers’ credit card information.
Apana’s charge is not evidence of guilt, and she is entitled to a fair trial in which the government will have to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
If convicted, Apana’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including her prior criminal record, her role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Miranda E. Dugi following an investigation by special agents of the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General.
Apana’s case has been charged with a single count of theft of property used by the U.S. Postal Service. She is from Maple Heights, Ohio, and the crime allegedly occurred between June 12, 2009, and June 15, 2014.
