Brutal Attack on Psychiatrist Lands Man 13-Year Prison Term

WASHINGTON DC – In a shocking display of violence, Anthony Braxton, 44, of Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 156 months in prison for the unprovoked assault of a psychiatrist at St. Elizabeths Hospital in 2020.

The brutal attack left the victim, a doctor at the hospital, unconscious for several minutes and resulted in a life-threatening brain bleed that required two surgeries.

According to the government’s evidence, on April 23, 2020, the victim had responded to a call for assistance on his ward when Braxton approached him from behind and punched him in the head, knocking him to the ground.

Prosecutors argued that Braxton’s actions were completely unprovoked, leaving the victim with lingering symptoms from his injuries to this day.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case, including former Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole H. Conte and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Caroline Huether, Julian Ginos, and Richard Carlton.

The sentencing comes as a relief to the victim, who has been dealing with the aftermath of the brutal attack for over four years.

Braxton’s sentence serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of violent crimes accountable for their actions.
