DC Man Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder While Armed

A jury in Washington D.C. has delivered a guilty verdict against Dennis Chase, 32, for first-degree murder while armed in the December 2020 shooting death of Anthony Orr.

According to the government’s evidence, Chase drove around the Washington Highlands neighborhood with Orr in the passenger seat before raising a gun to his head and firing a lethal shot. He then pushed Orr out of the car and sped off.

Chase attempted to destroy evidence by driving 30 miles north of the District to the woods of Severn, Maryland, where he doused his car in diesel exhaust fluid and tried to set it on fire. He then hiked through the woods until he found a random home, stripped down, and hid his clothes and other evidence in the back shed.

Chase claimed he acted in self-defense, but the jury rejected this argument, finding him guilty on all three counts: first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and Assistant United States Attorney Peter Roman. It was prosecuted and tried by Assistant United States Attorneys Wes Faulkner and Andrea Antonelli.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the verdict, which is set to be followed by sentencing on January 10, 2024.

Chase’s conviction is a significant blow to those who try to use violence and intimidation to resolve disputes, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and support in times of need.
