A federal jury in St. Paul has found Anthony Charles Deberry, 41, guilty of illegally possessing a firearm following a shootout at a local bar, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.
According to evidence presented at trial, Deberry got into a verbal altercation with a man inside Born’s Bar in St. Paul on September 18, 2021, and was subsequently kicked out of the bar and prohibited from re-entering. Deberry continued to antagonize the man in the vicinity of the bar before the altercation turned violent.
Later that evening, Deberry brandished a 9mm handgun with an activated laser site and gunfire broke out, including one shot fired by Deberry. Deberry suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Regions Hospital. Surveillance video footage from Born’s Bar showed Deberry hide his firearm under a parked car after the shooting.
Responding law enforcement officers recovered Deberry’s firearm as well as multiple discharged cartridge casings on the sidewalk. Because Deberry has prior felony convictions, he is prohibited from lawfully possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.
This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the St. Paul Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph S. Teirab and Lindsey E. Middlecamp tried the case. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
As a convicted felon, Deberry is now facing serious consequences for his actions. The guilty verdict serves as a reminder that those who break the law will be held accountable.
