A Wichita man has been caught using stolen identities to file false tax returns, leaving a trail of financial devastation in his wake.
Anthony Hopkins, 40, of Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to submit false tax claims, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The 40-year-old Wichita man admitted to preparing and filing false tax returns, knowing that the claims were entirely false. He used the identities of victims to create the tax returns, which were then used to collect income tax refunds. The refunds were deposited onto pre-paid debit cards in the names of the victims, which were delivered to Hopkins.
Hopkins’ scheme was a brazen attack on the integrity of the tax system, and he faces serious consequences for his actions. He is set to be sentenced on October 3, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Co-defendant Ashley Allen, 24, of Wichita, Kan., also pleaded guilty to the same count. She is set to be sentenced on July 29 and faces the same penalties as Hopkins.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Smith is credited with bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Hopkins’ guilty plea is a significant blow to those who would seek to exploit the tax system for personal gain. It serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable for their actions.
