Anthony Reed, Armed Robbery, Illinois 2022

CHICAGO — In a brutal display of violent thievery, Anthony Reed has been handed an eleven-year federal prison sentence for robbing taxi and rideshare drivers in the Windy City. The 28-year-old Chicago native committed the audacious acts within a week in February 2022.

In a series of armed robberies that shook the city, Reed threatened to kill his victims unless they handed over their money and belongings. During one incident, he delivered a violent blow with the barrel of his gun, leaving a taxi driver injured.

The spree began on Feb. 4, 2022, when Reed made off with a tablet and cell phone from a Flash Cab driver. The next day, he targeted another taxi driver, making off with $120 in cash, a tablet, and a phone. On Feb. 8, Reed struck again, this time robbing an Uber driver of a wallet containing between $200 and $400 in cash, as well as a cell phone and jacket.

Reed has been in law enforcement custody since his arrest in 2022. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to three counts of robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp, Jr., imposed the severe sentence.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Andrew S. Boutros, Special Agent-in-Charge Douglas S. DePodesta of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI, and Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling announced the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret A. Steindorf and Paul Schied argued that Reed’s actions warranted a significant sentence to protect the public from his criminal appetite and deter him from committing future violent acts.
