CAMDEN, N.J. – Sicklerville’s Chung ‘Alex’ Lam, 46, has been handed a 40-month prison sentence for orchestrating a massive $4 million tax fraud scheme against the IRS, according to U.S. Attorney Alina Habba.
Lam, who previously served an 18-month term for failing to pay payroll taxes in 2018, pleaded guilty to conspiring with temporary staffing company owners to conceal cash wages and evade paying over $4 million in payroll taxes. The scheme spanned from Q1 2018 to Q2 2023.
Documents and court statements revealed Lam’s role in cashing checks, retaining a share for himself, and using the rest to pay workers under the table, bypassing tax obligations. He also filed fraudulent income tax returns, omitting his illegal earnings. The scheme resulted in an estimated $628,351 tax loss.
In addition to the prison term, Lam was sentenced to 3 years of supervised release. IRS-Criminal Investigation agents led by Special Agent in Charge Jenifer Piovesan were credited with the investigation that led to his sentencing.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Bender from the Camden office. Defense counsel for Lam was John B. Brennan, Esq., of Marlton, NJ.
