Kiar Evans, Carjacking, Brandishing a Firearm, Illinois 2025

CHICAGO — Kiar Evans, a 26-year-old Chicago man, has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for carjacking and firearm offenses. The violent spree, which unfolded on the city’s West Side on May 20, 2021, saw Evans attempt to steal two vehicles within minutes. After failing to enter a Chevrolet Impala at gunpoint, Evans forced a Nissan Altima driver out of his car and drove off with it.

Evans’ luck ran out when he was involved in a multi-vehicle crash, leading to his arrest. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in his possession, making him ineligible to possess firearms as a previously convicted felon.

Judge Martha M. Pacold imposed the sentence during a hearing on July 18, 2025. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paige A. Nutini and Jimmy L. Arce argued that Evans’ actions demonstrated a complete disregard for public safety.

Evans was convicted in U.S. District Court in Chicago on all four counts against him: carjacking, attempted carjacking, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, and illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

The case was announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Andrew S. Boutros, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Douglas S. DePodesta, and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. Evans has been detained in federal custody since his arrest.

Evans’ sentence serves as a stark reminder that violent crimes like carjacking and firearms violations will be met with severe punishment to protect the public from such dangerous individuals.
