Dwight Hasberry, Carjacking with Infant in Vehicle, Illinois 2022

CHICAGO – Dwight Hasberry, 32, is headed to federal prison for 15 years after being convicted as part of a ruthless carjacking and robbery crew that terrorized Chicago neighborhoods in late September 2022. The crew’s brazen acts culminated in the carjacking of a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV with an infant strapped into a rear car seat, a detail that underscores the callous disregard for human life displayed by the defendants.

Hasberry, along with Damandre Henley, Tyler Oates-Nelson, and Dvario McDowell, all of Chicago, engaged in a spree of overnight crimes on September 28th and 29th, 2022. The four have been in custody since their apprehension, and the sentencing of Hasberry on July 10, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Manish Shah brings a measure of closure to a disturbing case. Henley, Oates-Nelson, and McDowell previously received prison sentences ranging from 15 to 22 years.

The carjacking involving the infant occurred in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. According to court documents, Henley, Hasberry, and McDowell brandished firearms at the driver and the helpless infant, ordering them out of the vehicle. Thankfully, the driver managed to remove the child before the trio sped away in the stolen Tiguan. This wasn’t an isolated incident; the crew immediately escalated their criminal activity.

Shortly after the carjacking, the group targeted victims in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood, robbing two individuals at gunpoint – one of their cell phone, wallet, and keys, the other of a backpack. Their rampage continued with a brazen robbery of a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. Oates-Nelson remained with the stolen SUV while Henley, McDowell, and Hasberry stormed the store, armed and dangerous. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elie Zenner rightfully described their actions as “terrorizing innocent Chicagoans.”

Inside the 7-Eleven, Henley violently struck a store clerk in the head with his firearm, forcing him to open the cash register. The crew absconded with cash, cigarettes, and liquor, leaving a trail of fear and destruction in their wake. Zenner argued in a pre-sentencing memorandum that these crimes “scare away businesses and ruin neighborhoods,” and that carjackings “impact the sense of safety and security for all Chicagoans.”

The sentences were announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Andrew S. Boutros, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Douglas S. DePodesta, and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. While the 15-year sentence for Dwight Hasberry represents a significant penalty, it’s a grim reminder of the violent crime plaguing Chicago and the lengths to which some individuals will go for personal gain. The Grimy Times will continue to track this case and report on the ongoing fight against violent crime in the city.
