Ronald Pallek, Investment Fraud, Illinois 2023

McHENRY, IL — In a scathing judgment against financial chicanery, Ronald Pallek, 55, of McHenry, Illinois, was sentenced to 48 months in prison and ordered to pay $1,679,250 in restitution for masterminding an investment fraud scheme that bilked over 100 victims out of more than $1.6 million.

Pallek’s devious scheme spanned years as he conned friends, friends-of-friends, and relatives into investing in a non-existent “iron condor” strategy that promised to double their money. The reality was starkly different—Pallek either squandered the funds or used them for his personal gain, including paying off his mortgage and car expenses, and feeding his gambling habit.

Despite losing funds from one group, Pallek continued to prey on new victims, using Ponzi-style payments with money stolen from the latest batch of investors. He also sent falsified earning statements, peddling lies about fictitious successes, as he sought to maintain his fraudulent front.

Judge Brett Ludwig of the United States District Court did not mince words, branding Pallek’s actions a “serious criminal enterprise” and noting how the defendant cultivated trust through deceit. Beyond prison, Pallek must serve three years of supervised release.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Richard G. Frohling, emphasized the profound emotional impact on victims, saying the sentence reflected both financial and emotional harm. FBI Milwaukee’s Michael Hensle vowed to continue the relentless pursuit of financial fraudsters, ensuring justice is served for all affected.

Jason Bushey, Acting Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, Chicago Field Office, underscored the betrayal involved, noting that investment fraud does more than deplete bank accounts—it erodes trust and weakens the financial systems. The case was investigated by the FBI and IRS-Criminal Investigation, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie F. Stewart.
