Sexual Assault Awareness, Kentucky 2024

LOUISVILLE, KY – The gritty streets of Kentucky were once again illuminated by the fierce fight against sexual violence as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky commemorated April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Joining forces with the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) and advocates from across the nation, this year’s observance took place under the stern gaze of U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett.

In a city where more than half of women and nearly one-third of men have faced physical sexual violence, Bennett emphasized the gravity of the issue: ‘Sexual assault is a serious crime that affects far too many in our communities.’ The U.S. Attorney cited CDC data revealing alarming rates of victimization, especially among women, racial minorities, and individuals with intellectual disabilities.

With cybercrimes on the rise, Bennett noted the impact of online harassment and abuse, including the sharing of intimate images without consent, which can lead to severe trauma for victims. ‘Our Office is fully committed to holding perpetrators accountable,’ he stated, underscoring the legal process’s protection of victim rights.

Prevention and education were at the heart of this month’s efforts. Bennett stressed the importance of teaching young people about sexual violence and creating supportive environments for survivors. Over 80 percent of rape survivors report their first attack before age 25, highlighting the urgency of reaching out to youth with vital information and resources.

DOJ-funded programs played a crucial role in enhancing prevention efforts and supporting survivors. Organizations like OVW and the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) have received substantial grant funding to address sexual violence and promote victim safety. During 2023, over $1.2 million was awarded to vital programs in Kentucky, including STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grants to develop programs against gender-based violence.

Bennett encouraged all stakeholders to learn more about federal grant opportunities and join the fight against sexual assault. ‘Let’s make our voices heard for those who cannot speak for themselves,’ he concluded, as the Western District of Kentucky stood united in its commitment to ending this devastating crime.
