AUSTIN, Texas – Federal judges in Austin handed down stiff sentences this week to three individuals illegally present in the United States, each with lengthy rap sheets and histories of violent crime and repeated offenses. The cases, announced by U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas, highlight a relentless crackdown on criminal aliens as part of the broader “Operation Take Back America.”
Nery Flores-Flores, a citizen of Mexico, will spend 65 months behind bars for illegal re-entry. The Kinney County Sheriff’s Office initially arrested Flores-Flores on December 9, 2024, on charges of criminal trespass and evading arrest near Brackettville. A subsequent federal investigation revealed a pattern of disregard for U.S. immigration laws. Flores-Flores has been removed from the U.S. a staggering four times and granted two voluntary returns. His criminal history extends beyond immigration violations, including prior convictions for felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence/battery, and grand theft auto. He pleaded guilty on May 12, 2024, after being remanded into federal custody February 21, 2024.
Angel Mireles-Maldonado, also a Mexican national, received a 51-month sentence after being discovered at the Travis County Jail in October 2024. He’d already been convicted and sentenced to 10 months for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Prior to that arrest, Mireles-Maldonado had racked up three convictions for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and assault causing bodily injury. Adding to his extensive record, he has been convicted of illegal re-entry twice before and removed from the U.S. a total of four times.
The third defendant, Angel Navarro-Miranda, another citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to 12 months and one day for illegal re-entry. Travis County deputies encountered Navarro-Miranda at the Travis County Jail on March 12 after arresting him for DWI, following a collision that resulted in property damage. Court records reveal a chronic pattern of drunk driving; Navarro-Miranda had previously been convicted of DWI on four separate occasions between August 2000 and May 2009. He was previously removed from the U.S. in September 2010.
These prosecutions fall under the umbrella of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative described by the DOJ as an effort to “repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” The operation streamlines resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
The sentences serve as a stark warning: repeated immigration violations combined with a history of violent and reckless behavior will be met with significant federal prison time. Simmons’ office continues to aggressively pursue cases involving criminal aliens, aiming to remove dangerous individuals from the streets of the Western District of Texas and reinforcing the message that the rule of law will be enforced. Further updates on Operation Take Back America and related prosecutions will be reported by Grimy Times as they develop.
