Cedar Rapids Felon Sentenced to 2 Years in Federal Prison for Possessing a Firearm

A 32-year-old Cedar Rapids resident has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for possession of a firearm, a crime that puts the community at risk.

Anthony Rush, 32, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams for his guilty plea to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

According to the plea agreement, Rush admitted to knowingly possessing a .380 auto caliber pistol in May 2020. The record at the sentencing hearing established that Rush ran from Cedar Rapids police officers and discarded a loaded pistol before being arrested.

Rush was convicted of attempted burglary in the second degree in Linn County in 2012.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

The case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Project Guardian enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
