Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Marijuana and Gun Crimes

A Cedar Rapids man, Anthony Steven Hall, Jr., has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a marijuana trafficking operation and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Hall, 31, was found guilty of three crimes: possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a felon and drug user, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The case began on April 13, 2015, when police conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Hall. During the stop, officers found 63 individually wrapped bags of marijuana and a .40 caliber pistol in the center console. Hall initially provided a false name and date of birth to the police, and when they attempted to arrest him, he attempted to flee and physically assaulted one of the officers.

Investigations revealed numerous text messages on Hall’s cell phone discussing the distribution of marijuana, as well as a cell phone video showing Hall with a firearm on a previous occasion. The evidence led to Hall’s conviction and sentencing.

Hall was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. In addition to the 30-year prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $300 and serve a five-year term of supervised release after his prison term. Hall is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, which includes representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshal Service, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Hall’s conviction is a significant blow to the city’s efforts to combat marijuana trafficking and gun violence. The Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force will continue to work to identify and prosecute individuals who engage in these crimes.
