BUFFALO MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR COCAINE CONSPIRACY CHARGE
A Buffalo man who operated a clothing store as a front for his narcotics trafficking business has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of cocaine conspiracy.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced that Antonio Briggs, 40, of Buffalo, was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, cocaine. Briggs was arrested in August 2010 along with 22 others as part of a crackdown on narcotics trafficking in the Buffalo area.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, revealed that Briggs sold quantities of cocaine from his clothing store, KJ Fashions, located at 439 East Amherst St. in Buffalo. To date, 15 of the 23 defendants have been convicted.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Catherine Baumgarten, who handled the case, stated that the arrest and conviction of Briggs were the result of a thorough investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Niagara County Drug Task Force.
The agencies involved in the investigation were led by Special Agent in Charge Brian R. Crowell, New York Field Division, of the Drug Enforcement Administration; Acting Special Agent in Charge Richard M. Frankel, Federal Bureau of Investigation; Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero, Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Sheriff James Votour, Niagara County; and Chief George Gast, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Transit Police.
Briggs’ 10-year sentence is a significant blow to the narcotics trafficking ring that operated in the Buffalo area. The sentence serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to disrupt and dismantle organized crime groups.
