APD Excessive Force Probe Concludes
In a shocking turn of events, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has been found to engage in a pattern or practice of use of excessive force, including use of unreasonable deadly force, in violation of the Constitution and federal law. The investigation, which was opened in November 2012 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, concluded that the APD’s actions were in direct contravention of the rights afforded to citizens under the law.
According to sources, the investigation, which was led by Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels and Acting U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez, found that the APD’s use of force had resulted in numerous instances of unnecessary and unjustified violence against the public. The investigation was launched in response to growing concerns over the APD’s use of force, including the use of deadly force against civilians.
The results of the investigation will be announced at a press conference to be held at 10:00 a.m. MDT on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albuquerque. Following the announcement, representatives of the U.S. Attorney’s Office will meet with City officials, APD officials, officials of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association, community advocates, and other stakeholders to discuss the results of the investigation.
