APPLETON, WI – Seth M. Rector, 37, of Appleton, Wisconsin, will spend the next two years behind bars after being sentenced for the vile crime of possessing child pornography. U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach handed down the sentence on May 10, 2019, following Rector’s guilty plea to violating 18 U.S.C. Sections 2252A.
According to court documents, Rector’s depravity began surfacing around November 2016, when he began downloading and sharing illicit material via the BitTorrent network. Federal investigators flagged Rector’s activity, noting the suggestive file names indicative of child exploitation. The investigation culminated in a September 26, 2017, raid on Rector’s residence.
A search of Rector’s home yielded two desktop computers. A forensic examination revealed a sickening cache of 573 individual child pornography image files, alongside the BitTorrent software used to procure and disseminate the material. The sheer volume of images and the duration of Rector’s activity painted a grim picture of sustained and deliberate abuse.
Judge Griesbach didn’t mince words during sentencing. He emphasized the egregious nature of the offense, highlighting the horrific content of the images and the extended period over which Rector engaged in this reprehensible behavior. Beyond the prison term, Rector will also face eight years of supervised release and mandatory registration as a sex offender. He will be required to keep registry officials informed of his residence, employment, and educational pursuits.
The case was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who painstakingly built the case against Rector. Assistant United States Attorney William Roach prosecuted the case, with crucial support from Victim Witness Specialist Jan Klika. The FBI’s commitment to dismantling these networks and bringing predators to justice remains unwavering.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dark corners of the internet and the devastating impact of child exploitation. The Grimy Times will continue to report on these disturbing crimes and the efforts to protect vulnerable children. Rector’s sentence, while a step in the right direction, doesn’t undo the harm he inflicted, but it does send a message: those who prey on children will be held accountable.
