Between July 11 and July 17, 2026, a massive smuggling operation was busted in Arizona, with 279 individuals charged for immigration-related crimes. The operation, which took place in the District of Arizona, targeted those who had illegally entered or re-entered the United States, as well as those responsible for smuggling them. The charges were filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, with support from federal law enforcement partners including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO), ICE-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI), U.S. Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
One notable case involved Braulio Espinoza, who was charged with Transportation of an Illegal Alien on July 11, 2026. Espinoza was stopped by a Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper on July 9, 2026, and was found to be driving two passengers who were citizens of Mexico, unlawfully present in the United States. Another case involved Ionut Calciu, who was charged with Reentry of a Removed Alien on July 11, 2026, after being previously removed from the United States on December 17, 2025.
The charges filed against the 279 individuals include 56 cases of aliens who illegally re-entered the United States, and 206 cases of aliens who illegally entered the United States. Additionally, 17 individuals were charged with smuggling illegal aliens into and within the District of Arizona.
