A 63-year-old Michigan man, Mark Craythorn Thompson, has been sentenced for his role in an Arizona-based fentanyl conspiracy. On September 28, 2023, Thompson picked up a package in Detroit containing 997.3 grams of powdered fentanyl, which had been shipped from Arizona via the U.S. Mail. Thompson intended to deliver the fentanyl to individuals in the Detroit metro area. He was sentenced on June 25 to 60 months in prison.
The fentanyl conspiracy was part of a larger investigation by the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The HSTF comprises agents and officers from various federal agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI.
The HSTF initiative was established by Executive Order 14159 to protect the American people from the threat of transnational crime. The task force places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking and other crimes involving children. In this case, Thompson pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl and was sentenced to 60 months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release.
The sentence is a significant blow to the Arizona-based fentanyl conspiracy, which had been using the U.S. Mail to ship large quantities of the deadly drug to destinations across the country.
