Phoenix authorities charged 240 individuals with human trafficking and related crimes this week, a major crackdown on the illicit trade in Arizona.
The operation, which ran from April 11 to 17, saw 240 defendants face charges including re-entry after deportation, entering the US illegally, and smuggling aliens.
Among the most notable cases is that of Rae Ashley Paya, who was accused of transporting illegal aliens for profit after a high-speed chase near Why, Arizona. Four migrants from Mexico were apprehended.
Another defendant, Jose Ivan Solano-Perez, was charged with a related offense.
The cases were referred or supported by federal agencies including US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO), ICE Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI), US Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the FBI.
